Azura Retreat Benguerra Falcon
Chalet Exterior at Pomene Bay Lodge

Pomene Bay Lodge is situated on a remote peninsula some 605 kilometres north of Maputo, and 170 kilometres south of Vilanculos. The Indian Ocean laps the front of the Lodge, and a Mangrove estuary forms the other border.

No matter where you are accommodated at the lodge, you are no more than 1 minute’s walk from the pristine beach, and the inviting Indian Ocean. As the Lodge is in a bay, it makes for very sheltered swimming.

Accommodation is varied, with 10 Water Chalets, 3 self-catering Chalets, and the Den (4 chalets with communal kitchen). The Water Chalets are all en-suite, with double beds. These chalets are set in the tidal-zone of the estuary. As the property runs on generator power, night-time lighting is from a reserve power supply.

The self-catering accommodation offers 1 each of a 4, 6 or 8 sleeper unit. All boast cutlery, crockery, gas cooker, freezer and bedding. Each unit also had a separate toilet and shower.

The Den is a collection of 4 one roomed chalets, each of which is en-suite. The Den is ideal for a small group of friends.

The lodge offers excellent diving (it is PADI affiliated), and there are 12 regular dive sites available – with more to be explored. There are reef dives varying from 8 to 30 metres.

There are also a variety of other optional activities – snorkelling, quad bike trails, mangrove trails and horse riding.

For the keen fisherman, there is excellent Game Fishing. A charter boat, with experience skipper is available for hire, and is equipped with all rods, tackles and bait.

Fly fishing enthusiasts are also well catered for, as there is a good variety of areas to choose from. In addition, you might want to try estuary fishing, which can be interesting, on light tackle with a variety of juvenile game Fish to be found. Fishing in amongst the Mangrove waterways from a kayak can also be great fun with large green and red snapper lurking in the deeper pools.

Fishing is best during the summer months between October and June...February to April is generally excellent, with a large variety of game species available.

The Pomene area is also regarded as a reserve and has a number of environmental strategies in place. One of these is the ban on the catching of bottom Fish, and this has had a notable affect on the amount and size of game Fish to be found in the various Fishing grounds in the area.
